Earthing design should never be based only on a fixed rule such as “one earth pit per equipment.” A reliable system must be designed around soil conditions, fault current, protection time and safety limits.
1️⃣ Measure Soil Resistivity
Soil resistivity ρ (Ω·m) is commonly measured using the Wenner four-point method.
For approximately uniform soil:
ρ ≈ 2πaR
Where:
a = spacing between test electrodes
R = measured resistance
Higher soil resistivity generally requires deeper electrodes, more electrodes or a larger earth grid.
2️⃣ Estimate Electrode Resistance
For a vertical rod, a commonly used approximation is:
R ≈ ρ / (2πL) × [ln(4L/d) − 1]
Where:
L = rod length
d = rod diameter
Increasing electrode length is usually more effective than simply increasing diameter.
⚠️ For multiple rods, resistance is not always R/n because closely spaced electrodes influence each other.
3️⃣ Determine Fault Current
The earthing system must safely carry the expected fault current until the protective device clears the fault.
Consider:
System Voltage → Source Impedance → Fault Level → Earthing Arrangement → Protection Time
4️⃣ Size the Earthing Conductor
A commonly used adiabatic equation is:
S = I√t / k
Where:
S = conductor size
I = fault current
t = fault-clearing time
k = material/insulation factor
Final sizing should also consider mechanical strength and corrosion.
5️⃣ Check Earth Resistance
There is no single earth-resistance value suitable for every project.
The required value depends on:
System Type + Fault Current + Protection + Electrode Arrangement + Soil Conditions
6️⃣ Check Touch & Step Voltage
For substations and high-fault-level installations, low resistance alone is not enough.
The design must also control:
Touch Voltage + Step Voltage + Ground Potential Rise
Design Flow
Soil Resistivity → Fault Current → Electrode Arrangement → Conductor Sizing → Earth Resistance → Touch/Step Voltage → Testing
A good earthing system is not just an earth pit. It is a complete safety system for people, equipment and reliable fault clearance.
Good Earthing = Right Calculation + Right Installation + Right Testing
